Toronto Regional Champions Campaign

The Toronto Regional Champion Campaign is a mentoring and education program that connects young women with Toronto’s women Councillors. In an effort to increase women’s participation in municipal politics, the program aims to inspire and familiarize young women with the job of a municipal councillor.

This mentoring program offers hands-on experience with a woman Councillor in Toronto’s municipal government. Participants will gain insight into the work and experiences of a woman Councillor.

PROGRAM  REQUIREMENTS:

The program commitment is from November 2009 to May 2010.  Participation in this program requires the following:

  • Time Commitment (6 hours per month) – Participants complete the required hours and the following tasks below:
    • Bi-Weekly 3 hours day-time drop-in (November to May) in a municipal councillors office to either:
      • learn the day-to-day management functions in the councillors office,  and/or
      • learn about a particular topic of municipal government by doing research with a councillor
    • Attend 3 day-time meetings including one council meeting, one municipal committee meeting, one meeting in the ward and produce a one-page summary highlighting what you have learned.
    • Attend 3 evening-time mentoring seminar
    • Arrange for one presentation to be made by a councillor in your class or organisation to increase women’s participation in municipal government
    • Write a small article in your school, college, community or local newspapers about your participation in this program

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Young woman between 19-26 years of age
  • Live in the city of Toronto
  • Demonstrated participation in any community involvement (such as school council, tenant council, co-op housing, non-governmental organisation, social, cultural, arts, music, religious association or organisation; or any other relevant experiences)
  • Essential to fulfill time commitment for this program (see program requirement)
